STEPHEN MINISTRY

The purpose of Stephen Ministry at Bryant Street is to recruit, train, equip and supervise Stephen ministers in order to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting, so that, ultimately, no one has to suffer alone.

Stephen Ministers are trained, lay caregivers who provide one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally or chronically ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life challenge. Our Stephen Ministry team helps provide quality, caring ministry for those in need for as long as they need it.

Do you need a Stephen Minister?

We're brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, and independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that's not God's plan. Galatians 6:2 says "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." God wants us to care for others - and allow others to care for us in our time of need.

If you're sad or struggling inside, don't suffer alone. Ask for help. We've got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. (It's confidential, too!) Our Stephen Ministers have been trained to provide one-to-one confidential Christian care to persons in need, at their request.

If you are going through a life crisis and would like to be matched with a Stephen Minister, please call the Church Office to leave ONLY your name and phone or email info.  This information will be passed on to our Stephen Ministry leaders.

Can you become a Stephen Minister?

Do you have the desire to help care for people who are hurting?  Potential Stephen Ministers are interviewed by the Stephen Ministry Leaders, then commit to and complete 50 hours of excellent training, which equips them to offer one-on-one care for hurting people in our church and community.

Stephen Ministers, once they have been commissioned, commit to attending peer supervision groups, which help them continue to provide quality care to their care receivers.  The Stephen Ministry provides training at least once every calendar year.

If you are interested in starting the process of becoming a Stephen Minister, contact the Church Office and your information will be passed on to our Stephen Ministry leaders.

How can you support Stephen Ministry?

Be a lookout!  YOU can play an important role in our Stephen Ministry...because you may know of a friend, neighbor, co-worker or relative who is going through a difficult time and who could benefit from the focused care, encouragement, and support of a Stephen Minister.  If you know of someone who is hurting, talk with one of our Stephen Leaders.  They can talk with you about how we can connect the person you know with one of our Stephen Ministers. It's a great way for you to show how much you care!

Pray!  Stephen Ministry is only as effective as God empowers us!  Stephen Ministers are the care givers, but Jesus is the CURE giver.  Pray for the power of God to be present in this ministry.
